In an effort to get rid of leftover Easter ham last week, I ended up stumbling across this recipe for “mushroom, ham and cream sauce.”

Speaking of Easter leftovers, I ended up making a total of 24 deviled eggs and 6 eggs worth of egg salad (which I forgot I hate).

Let’s see. How can I describe this drool-inducing sauce? It’s kind of like if salted butter and heavy cream hooked up one night and made the most delicious baby ever.

While many recipes on this blog might come from non-Italian sources (, my “cook everything” cookbooks, etc.), this recipe is straight legit. My adorable New Yorker step-grandmother, “Granny Zeller,” was of Italian descent and one of the best cooks in New York. (I’m legally allowed to say this because it’s 100 percent accurate.) Her marinara¬†recipe has been passed down through generations, and now I’m passing it on to you.
